Friday marks the traditional Chinese Chongyang Festival, also known as the Double Ninth Festival. On this special day people are expected to pay their respects to the elderly. Retailers are quick to offer all sorts of products for the festival and the elderly.

It's Chinese custom to eat cakes on Chongyang Festival. Many local Beijing bakeries have been baking three times as many cakes as normal days and are still selling out quickly. Clothes for the elderly and other presents suitable for the elderly are also selling very well.

The festival falls on the ninth day of the ninth month of the Chinese lunar calendar. Since nine is the highest odd digit, people take two of them together to signify longevity. The Chongyang Festival has been declared China's day for the elderly.
