In the past decade, China has become the world's "factory." Its low-cost labor force and quality output have attracted companies and contractors far and wide. But the country is trying to change its image: from a mere manufacturer to a true innovator.
This new car may look ordinary. But it's powered by hydrogen. This makes it a 100 percent green vehicle.
Professor zhang Tong of Tongji university said, "The biggest advantage for fuel-cell vehicles is their zero emission. The only waste they produce is water, which is not a pollutant."
In many countries, green vehicles may be just a concept. In China, however, they're ready to make their debut during the 2008 Olympic Games.
Professor Zhang said, "Our creation has astonished the world. And the performance of these vehicles is also fantastic."
The modern automobile was invented in the West over a century ago. It took China only seven years to catch up on the research in green automotive technology.
The initiator of the clean-fuel vehicle project is Wan Gang, the newly appointed minister of science and technology. He is one of many talented people who have recently returned to China from jobs and studies overseas.
Indeed, over the past five years, people like them have launched more than 15 hundred high-tech companies in Beijing's Zhongguancun high-tech zone.
