Government officials, organizations, and scholars from around the world are attending the two-day meeting. The head of China's quality watchdog says the government is taking the food safety issue very seriously.
Safeguarding food quality has become a global issue and an opportunity for international cooperation. That's the consensus reached at the China International Food Safety and Quality Control Conference.
The head of the World Health Organization's food safety department said China's food safety control systems are undergoing important reforms. Once they are completed, China's experience will benefit consumers, AND provide valuable experience for countries.
The director of China's quality watchdog, Li Changjiang, described China's food safety control systems and the ongoing efforts to improve quality standards. And he said developing countries need more support from developed countries.
Li Changjiang, Quality Control Chief says "Some developing countries have economic limitations. Their governments have difficulties dealing with such a big food safety issue. So to resolve the issue, developed countries should take some responsibility for it."
Li said developed and developing countries should join hands to face the task together. China and the United States have had some positive cooperation in food safety control.
Li says "Through international cooperation and exchange, I think we can push forward bilateral and multilateral cooperation to join forces and resolve the food safety issue."
The conference also held a food safety and quality control equipment expo to showcase cutting-edge solutions, services and technology on food safety control.
