Special Report:   HK 10 Years

The HK SAR government is heaving a sigh of relief. Reports show that mainland travellers have remained keen to travel there, despite bad press on fake products.

From April 27 to May 6, mainland tourist volume to Hong Kong reached 540 thousand in nine days, up over 30 percent from the same holiday period last year.

Most shops sales volume increased by 10 to 20 percent, compared to non-peak periods. There was a slight drop in group tours. But that was off-set by a sharp increase in individual travellers. Meanwhile, the average spending power of each tourist was estimated to have grown by eight percent.

Reports came out in March that a mainland traveller had bought fake products at high prices while visiting Hong Kong. The news had raised concerns about the region's tourism industry.
