Special Report:   HK 10 Years

Samples of mandarin fish in Hong Kong have been found to contain the poisonous chemical, Malachite Green

But, Hong Kong's Center for Food Safety says exposure to the detected levels of the chemical is unlikely to cause health consequences to consumers. The center has been cooperating with Chinese mainland authorities to strengthen inspections on the fish shipments. For the next 2 months, freshwater exports shipped out from the Chinese mainland to Hong Kong will have to be sealed with detailed labels.

The Hong Kong authorities have also bought millions of Hong Kong dollars' of new equipment to strengthen checks. But many consumers in Hong Kong are still reluctant to buy mandarin fish at the moment. And retailers have been asked to stop selling the fish.
