China will upgrade airport facilities in its western regions over the next five years. Over 50 billion yuan has been earmarked for the intiative.
The General Administration of Civil Aviation says six airports will be relocated, while dozens will be expanded during that period. In Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region alone, the number of its airports will increase from 16 to 20 by the year 2010.
The western regions currently have over 50 civilian airports, accounting for nearly 40 percent of the country's total.
