Special Report:   2007 Spring Festival

Many mainland travellers are eyeing the island as their Spring Festival destination. And to cater to this demand, Taiwan is trying to create a better travel experience for visitors all around.

As mainland travellers get set to tour Taiwan, the island in turn is busy preparing for their arrival. Taiwan authorities have noted that hotels in Taipei often suffer from low occupancy during the weekend. On the flip side, the southern part of the island has low occupancy during weekdays. As such, Taiwan's industry insiders are suggesting travel agencies to arrange tourists' itinerary in a way that would help balance the island's hotel occupancy rate, while travellers can also save some money.

Chairman of Taipei Association of Travel Agents Zhuang Xiushi said "We suggest the travellers stay in Taipei city during the weekend, and visit scenic sights of in the southern part of the island on weekdays."

The move would provide a win-win situation for everyone. There are now altogether 88 hotels for travellers in Taiwan, while another 50 are under construction. With such numbers, officials believe the hotel room availability should be more than enough.

Separate from accommodations, the association is also addressing other areas to guarantee better trips for mainland visitors. For example, it's specified that all the sight seeing buses should be no older than seven years.

Other departments like the transportation, hygiene, and fire control are also preparing for the arrival of mainland travellers. They're examining the qualification in major scenic sights, and say any problems uncovered will be solved as soon as possible.

Meanwhile the aviation industry is also urging officials to carry out weekend charter flights between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan as soon as possible.
