Upwardly mobile Chinese citizens have been venturing overseas in their travels. Last year's outbound travellers from the mainland rose 12 percent from 2005.

The top spots for their holidays include Hong Kong, Macao, Japan, Thailand, South Korea and Russia.

According China's Exit-Entry Bureau, 35 million mainland citizens travelled overseas last year. Meanwhile, China also saw more than 22 million inbound travelers from other countries and regions in 2006, up nearly 10 percent year-on-year. Out of these inbound travellers, over 51 percent were tourists. Meanwhile, China also apprehended nearly 6,000 people who attempted to leave the country illegally in 2006.
