Experts say New Year's eve has become a favorite time for shopping lovers in Shanghai and the numbers seem to confirm that assessment.

For just one shop alone, sales volume in China's financial center exceeded 100 million yuan for the day by the wee hours of January 1. Malls in Shanghai offered coupons and promotions, and stayed open around the clock to cater to the enthusiastic shoppers and heavy demand.

Throngs of crowds of customers rushed in and out. Long queues accumulated in front of the cashiers and ATM machines, and taxi cabs were running short of service. Many believe New Year's eve is the cheapest time of the year.
