The number of on-the-job accidents in Vietnam has increased dramatically. From 2003 to 2005, there was a 55 percent increase in workplace accidents. In that same time period, the number of on-the-job deaths rose 12 percent. The coal mining, construction and energy industries account for a large number of these accidents. In today's Asian working series, Vietnam Television tells us how the country has improved workplace safety.

Labor safety is necessary for all factories, especially in this plastic medical products company. Infrastructure here was built up on international standards but the manager of the company needs to cope with the issue of noise. Noise can affect the workers health. The ILO experts suggest isolating the factory or wearing ear plugs.

Do Thi Tu Anh of WMFIP coodinator said "All the factories have to follow the principles and rules on labor safety set by Vietnam’s government. Ministry of labor, invalids and social affairs has its Inspection Department to check the working condition in the factories and that’s the traditional approach to keep the labor condition under control. The foreign experts share with the local factories managers, experiences on hour to make working condition decent for all laborers."

In this Motor manufacturing enterprise, new steel carton bags are used to store the products.

Materials are now kept on shelves and the risk of workers slipping or falling down as a result of untidy materials has been reduced. Notice board information here reminds the workers about safety.

The lamps here are lower now, as they give more light for workers working on the ground. In fact, good working condition are a important requirement for a company to export goods and participate in the trend towards global integration. Enterprises have to pay attention to these matters.

"The improvement of working conditions and labor management is very helpful and important for every small and medium scale factory in Vietnam. We now try to encourage not only the managers but also the workers understand and find out themselves how to take advantage of the program like this." Said Phung Quang Huy, director general of Bureau for Employer's Activities in Vietnam

This is a ceremony observing the safe labor week in Vietnam. The spirit of the ceremonies like this must be repeated often and in every work place in all industries. This means that that managers of all factories should pay enough attention to working condition and know how to do it,as there is a relation among industrial relationship, working condition and productivity.

In tomorrow's Asian working series, Kim Young Sang from South Korea's Educational Broadcasting System will bring you a story about what South Korean women are doing to protect their labor rights as non-permanent workers.
