Perhaps one of the most significant victories at the 2004 Olympics was that by China’s Liu Xiang in the 110 metres hurdles. His triumph ended the traditional dominance enjoyed by European and North American athletes not only in his own event but across the whole spectrum of track and field. It also gave a generation of Chinese athletes, genuine hope of achieving Olympic glory.
