Cheng Siwei: Trailblazer of China鈥檚 Economic Future

He is a visionary who has helped to shape China鈥檚 economic future. He is not afraid of taking risks, he is not afraid to charter his own path. He is Cheng Siwei, a man always ahead of the rest of the pack, and always pioneering and undertaking new ideas and novel concepts.

Cheng Siwei (1935- ), born in Beijing, ancestral home in Xiangxiang, Hunan Province.


Vice chairman of 10th NPC Standing Committee; Vice chairman of 9th NPC Standing Committee; chairman of 7th Central Committee of China Democratic National Construction Association (CDNCA); specialist on soft science and chemistry.

Joined Chinese New Democratic Youth League at-15-year old; returned to the mainland from Hong Kong, 1951; studied at South China University, Guangzhou City and South China Engineering Institute; graduated from East China Chemical Engineering Institute, 1956.

Worked as technician of Shengyang Chemical Engineering Research Institute, technician and deputy office chief of Tianjin Chemical Engineering Research Institute, technician of Beijing Petrochemical Engingeering Research Institute, and engineer of Scientific and Technological Bureau, 1978, of Ministry of Chemical Industry.

Obtained MBA from University of California, Los Angeles, USA, 1984.

Became senior engineer and chief engineer of Scientific and Technological Bureau of Ministry of Chemical Industry; member of National Soft Scientific and Technological Progress Prize Committee, 1987; vice president and chief engineer of Scientific and Technological Research Institute of Ministry of Chemical Industry, 1988; member of Guiding Committee for the Work on Soft Science, 1989; deputy chief engineer, 1993, vice minister of Chemical Industry, 1994-1997; elected vice president of 4th Council of Taiwan Studies Society, 1998.
