Qinghai-Tibet Railway carries 175,000 people during holiday

  BEIJING, Oct. 12 (Xinhuanet) -- The Qinghai-Tibet Railway carried 175,000 passengers during the eight-day National Day holiday starting on Oct.1, a 4.09 percent increase year on year, according to the Qinghai-Tibet Railway Company.

  Lin Zhigang, a leading official of the company, said that most of the passengers going in and out of Tibet were for sightseeing or visiting their relatives.

  The travel peak fell on October 7, with the railway carrying 19,065 people that day.

  The 2,000-km Qinghai-Tibet Railway, running from Xining, capital of Qinghai Province, to Lhasa, capital of Tibet, is the first railway leading to Tibet‘s hinterland and the world‘s highest and longest railway on the plateau.
