RIO DE JANEIRO, May 6 (Xinhua) -- The number of domestic broadband Internet users in Brazil reached 22.3 million in March, up 22 percent from the same period last year, according to a survey released on Wednesday by the consulting company Ibope Nielsen Online.

The figure was up 7.7 percent from February. The number of broadband users represents 88 percent of the total number of domestic Internet users in the country, Ibope said.

Domestic Internet users totaled 25.5 million in March, up 2.6 percent from February and 12 percent from the same period last year. The number of dial-up Internet users, which remained stable in the past years, fell to 3.2 million in March.

According to the survey, the easy broadband access contributes to the increase in the number of domestic Internet users in Brazil.

Brazilians spend more time on the web as the broadband gains more popularity. In March, Brazilians spent an average 26 hours and 15 minutes on the Internet, up 18 percent from February and 10percent from the same period in 2008.

The record-high figures made Brazilians the people who spend the longest time surfing on the Internet. The British ranked second in the list, with an average of 25 hours per month, while the French ranked third, with an average 24 hours per month on the web.

The Ibope survey also showed that the total number of people over 16 who access the Internet in Brazil, whether from home, work, or public facilities such as libraries and Internet cafes, reached 62.3 million in March.
