At the time of the handover many were predicting the city's economic decline, but Steve Vickers started a company, International Risk Limited. Ten years later his firm has gained a strong foothold in economic risk analysis.
Steve Vickers moved here in 1974 to join Hong Kong's police force. He doesn't regret staying after the handover.
"I thought about it quite carefully, but I've observed the changes in China, I've observed the government, I've observed the policies. My assessment is yes, that things would be different, but probably interesting, challenging and exciting. So for all those reasons I made a decision to stay and do business here. And in fact to make Hong Kong a corporate headquarters from which to attack the Asian market," said Stephen Vickers President & CEO of International Risk Limited.
"I believe in Hong Kong, I believe in the system, I believe in the people. Hong Kong people are very resilient, very flexible people who have lived through many different circumstances. They are amongst the most pragmatic people you'll meet on the planet. I thought that Beijing basically had good will towards Hong Kong and wanted it to succeed. But I think I'm a Hong Konger now, so the recent Rugby 7s, if England had played Hong Kong I would hope that Hong Kong would win. But nationally I'm an Englishman, that's how I would describe myself," said Steve Vickers.
