Olympic venues like the “Bird’s Nest” and “Water Cube” have already opened to the public, and received a warm response from tourists, but Beijing Olympic Basketball Gymnasium, also known as the Wukesong Indoor Stadium, is relatively low-key. Originally scheduled to open during the Labor Day holidays, the Stadium has not been put into operation yet. The owner of the Stadium said on June 28 that the venue is still under reconstruction and will officially open to the public after the National Day holidays.

The Wukesong Indoor Stadium, originally scheduled to open during the Labor Day holidays, has not released any further information regarding its opening. Guo Jinjiao, vice president of the venue, said the reconstruction project started after the Spring Festival but is “much more complex than building a new venue” and has therefore been delayed.

Guo added that the reconstruction project is expected to be completed by the end of July or early August and will have a test run for the media. It is expected to open officially after the National Day Golden Week to give way to the celebrations for the 60th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China.

In response to a government appeal, the Wukesong Indoor Stadium received some visitors during the Labor Day holidays, said Guo. However, the impressions of the visitors indicated that its popularity was far lower than the “Bird’s Nest” and “Water Cube” located at the center of the Olympic Green. Meanwhile, opening the Stadium to visitors does not satisfy the spectators’ demand for unique experiences. She added, “There is not much meaning in visitors’ coming and looking at the seats and floor.”

Guo explained that after its official opening, the Stadium will host performances and games at international standards. Spectators will then be able to personally experience a venue that conforms to the NBA standards.
