"Xiushui, Simatai and Xinfadi," the names which people are familiar with, have been recently certified after examination as famous trademarks in Beijing. Beijing Administration for Industry and Commerce published on its official website a list of the newly certified and reviewed famous trademarks in Beijing on June 2.

On the list, 64 are newly certified as famous trademarks. Of them, those such as “Xiushui, Xinfadi, Simatai and Beijing Friendship Hotel” have become famous trademarks in Beijing for the first time. The other 53 have been recertified after examination when the validity of their previously conferred famous trademarks expired. Up to now, Beijing has 377 famous trademarks.

According to Beijing Administration for Industry and Commerce, the famous trademarks will be valid for three years. The Administration established a system this year to pay visits to the famous trademarks. If the administration finds serious problems like the sharp quality downgrading of some brands, some failing to meet the standards for a number of times and consumers filing repeated complaints, it will cancel those trademarks and they will not be eligible for the certification again within five years.

“The Xiushui Problem,” defects cannot obscure the virtues

Xiushui Market has long been the center of attention due to its problem with intellectual property rights protection. Beijing Administration for Industry and Commerce said yesterday that the certification of the trademark “Xiushui” was based on the “Measures on Famous Trademarks Assertion and Protection in Beijing,” and was jointly examined by Beijing Administration for Industry and Commerce, Beijing Municipal Rural Affairs Committee and Beijing Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision, and finally was based on consultation with other related departments.

The criteria for a famous trademark are: playing a leading role in its industry for three consecutive years judging from key economic indicators such as sales volume, paid tax and gained profits; occupying a relatively large market share; widely acknowledged by consumers; and well known within relevant markets. According to an official from Beijing Administration for Industry and Commerce, Xiushui Market has earmarked about 100 million yuan to build the Intellectual Property Rights Protection Fund, the biggest amount ever seen in any market.

Wang Zili, General Manager of the Xiushui Market, said that there are indeed problems in the history of Xiushui such as knock-offs of famous brands, but Xiushui is “in a process of thorough changes,” and it is undeniable that Xiushui Market is well known both at home and abroad.
