The Chinese embassy in Iraq confirms eight Chinese citizens have been kidnapped in Iraq, the second abduction targeting Chinese since last April.

The embassy says the eight people went missing last week on their way back to China via Jordan and the embassy is trying its best to secure their release.

The embassy is contacting Muslim leaders, who helped rescue the Chinese hostages last time.

On the same day, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Kong Quan says China is seriously concerned with the kidnapping of Chinese people in Iraq and will take all measures to rescue them.

Kong Quan notes the Chinese people have always been friendly to the Iraqi people and showed them sympathy and supported them.

He also says the Chinese government takes the fundamental interests of Iraqi people into full consideration when dealing with the Iraq issue.
