China elects its new state leadership today. The fifth plenary meeting of the first session of the 10th National People's Congress today elected Wu Bangguo, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Chinese Communist Party Central Committee, Chairman of the 10th NPC Standing Committee.
The NPC that is empowered to elect the state leadership has a new leader. Wu Bangguo, a member of the Standing Committee of Politburo of the CPC Central Committee, became the nation's top legislator, replacing Li Peng.
Altogether 15 others were elected vice chairmen of the NPC Standing Committee. Another 159 members out of the 167 candidates were elected into the NPC Standing Committee.
The lists of candidates for the leadership had been discussed and then approved by all 2983 deputies to the NPC first session.
