Chinese President Hu Jintao and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin told reporters on Tuesday that the two countries need to strengthen friendly ties and expand areas of cooperation based on current achievements. The new Chinese central leadership attaches great importance to the strategic partnership of cooperation between the two sides, Hu told reporters after talks with Putin and the signing of a joint statement.
At the joint press conference after their talks, the two leaders expressed their shared confidence in further boosting bilateral trade. They agreed to work together to establish a multi-polar world, which takes into account the interests of every member of the international community and is based on clear and widely accepted international principles. Both leaders said the two countries should abide by the Russia-China Good Neighborly Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation and the spirit of a series of important documents signed by the two sides in the past decades.
During his meeting with Vladimir Putin, Hu Jintao proposed that the two sides maintain and further strengthen the current cooperative mechanism between departments of the two nations, and the high-level communication mechanism between heads of state, parliaments and governments.
Hu briefed Putin on China's fight against SARS and thanked the Russian government and people for their support in this regard.
Putin said Sino-Russian ties have witnessed all-around development, especially in economic cooperation, since the Russia-China Good Neighborly Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation was signed in July 2001. He said Russia is willing to work with China to explore ways of expanding cooperation into the fields environmental protection, finance and investment while carrying out the existing joint projects.
After the talks, the two leaders witnessed the signing of some agreements on bilateral cooperation and signed a joint statement.
