An international conference on SARS got underway Wednesday in the hard-hit city of Toronto. Health officials from Canada and elsewhere are seeking to pool their knowledge of SARS and help combat its spread.

The meeting began one day after the World Health Organization announced that it would lift a global warning against non-essential travel to Toronto. The two-day conference is intended to pool collective global knowledge of the virus and help craft a health strategy in Canada.

Canadian health officials also sought to pass on lessons they have learned in dealing with the spread of SARS. Officials said one key to Canada's success in containing the spread of the virus lay in isolation and infection control. Participants of the conference include health officials from the US, the WHO, China, South American nations, ASEAN nations, Mexico, and Britain.
