Environmental experts from the World Health Organization visited the Amoy Gardens residential area in Hong Kong on Wednesday afternoon, to explore any links between environmental factors and the spread of SARS. Amoy Gardens is one of the locations most seriously affected by SARS in Hong Kong.

Four environmental experts from the World Health Organization visited three households in Amoy Gardens, taking samples of pipes, exposed walls and ventilation systems for further tests.

The WHO experts expressed their satisfaction with the investigations made so far by the Hong Kong SAR government. Wednesday's on-the-spot inspection did not suggest any other attributive factors to the quick spread of SARS in this area. In mid-April, the Hong Kong SAR government attributed the rapid spread of the deadly disease to the drainage system and bad environmental sanitation in Amoy Gardens. But it could not explain some other problems. At the invitation of the SAR government, the WHO sent this team to help investigate the relationship between environmental factors and SARS. The team will stay in Hong Kong for three weeks.
