Faced with the daunting task of fighting the potentially deadly SARS disease, senior Chinese leaders have made various calls for concerted efforts to win over the campaign.

Vice President Zeng Qinghong inspected on Wednesday the Beijing Sino-Japanese Friendship Hospital, which has just been designated as a special hospital to treat SARS patients.

Zeng Qinghong went to the observation zones for suspected SARS patients and conveyed the central government and the Party's greetings to the medical workers on the frontline of the fight against the epidemic. He said: " As the Labor Day holiday approaches, I'd like to extend holiday greetings to all of you here on behalf of the CPC Central Committee and the State Council. I'd like to express our gratitude to you for your wonderful work."

Zeng Qinghong stressed that stricter and more scientific measures should be adopted in the prevention of SARS so that while patients are receiving better treatment, the safety of medical workers can be better protected.

Meanwhile, Vice Premier Wu Yi has called for substantial measures to prevent, treat and control SARS in the capital in a bid to ensure people's health and safety. Wu made the call during a meeting on Tuesday with local officials to hear reports on the city's battle against the disease.

Wu Yi, who is also Health Minister, praised the municipal government for the measures it has adopted to fight SARS since a coalition working group was established. However, she warned that the situation in the capital was still serious, noting that it was imperative to cut off sources of the epidemic and form an anti-SARS network throughout the city.

Jia Qinglin, chairman of the CPPCC, China's top advisory body, urged the country's united front made up of non-communist parties, to make their own contributions by making good use of the medical expertise among their members and more actively engaging in public welfare activities.
