The re-election was part of a poll to decide 18 members of the UN human rights body at the 63rd session of the UN General Assembly. In a secret ballot, China won 167 votes from the 191 member states present, securing another three-year term from 2009 to 2012.

A spokesman for the Chinese Permanent Mission to the UN said China has made remarkable progress in the field of human rights. He said China has fulfilled pledges and commitments made during its last campaign for membership of the Council.
