The Chinese government has been working hard to rebuild the Sichuan quake zone. The reconstruction experience has helped improve the country's disaster prevention and reduction work.
Du Wei, Deputy director of Quake Prevention Department of China Earthquake Admin., said, "Though the time can be extremely limited, we believe it's vital for minimizing casualties and economic losses. We will spare no efforts to promote the technology development in this field, and its application in the active quake areas." |
Officials say the country is gearing up work in 4 aspects. China will continue efforts to improve the legal framework for disaster response. It will also strengthen emergency preparedness. This includes amending its emergency response plan, a disaster information system, and proper storage of emergency relief materials.
Projects to improve disaster reduction capability will be carried out, and the community's role in disaster reduction will be emphasized. The government is also working hard on an earthquake prediction system, with trial operations hoped for within a year. Warnings can be only on levels of minutes, and even seconds. But experts say when it comes to saving lives, every second counts.
