They are going to begin discussions with their Chinese counterparts on how to revive the stalled negotiations with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea aimed at curtailing its nuclear ambitions. They will then travel to Seoul on Friday for four days before flying to Tokyo on Monday and then Moscow on Tuesday.

The diplomats have no plans to travel to Pyongyang. Last month, the DPRK said it was pulling out of the six-nation negotiations on dismantling its nuclear programmes.

The six-party talks, which began in 2003, involve the South Korea, the DPRK, China, Japan, Russia and the United States.
