Rebuilding houses is the most difficult job for earthquake victims in remote mountain villages in China's quake-hit regions. Hongbai town is located in the mountains within the territory of Shifang City. The houses in the villages there were almost entirely destroyed by the quake last May.

It takes nearly two hours to drive the fifty kilometers from central Shifang to Xiamakou Village. Construction can be seen all along the way, despite the difficulty transporting building materials.

Fortunately, building materials for the Xiamakou villagers are close at hand. All the new houses here are made of wood. This is also part of the local governments' rebuilding plan. It avoids the high cost of building material transport, and conforms to the demand of seismic standards.

Witnessing the construction of her new house, Chen Yanzi looks happy, even though she has to give up her part time job in the town.
