Fear over the safety of pork is costing producers and processors in the US 2.5 million dollars a day. The industry warns a spike in consumer pork prices is possible if trade restrictions persist.

Fear over the safety of pork is costing producers and  processors in the US 2.5 million dollars a day.

Although there's no evidence of the new strain of the H1N1 virus being found in pigs, the American hog market is down about ten percent. Several countries have now banned US pork imports. The industry is urging its producers to take steps to keep infected humans away from pig farms. Trade groups fear some producers may get out of the business. And fewer pigs on the market will lead to higher pork prices in supermarkets for domestic and international consumers.
