Holmes met with Sri Lankan Foreign Minister, Rohitha Bo-golla-gama in Colombo before flying to a village south of the war zone to inspect displacement camps overwhelmed by the massive influx of war refugees in recent days. Earlier on Monday, Sri Lankan forces rejected a unilateral ceasefire announcement by the Tamil Tigers and attacked a rebel-held village in the north.
Some 50 thousand civilians are still believed to be trapped in the remaining small area where the conflict is going on.
