Pakistan's military spokesman says the country's forces are confident they can tackle the threat posed by Taliban militants operating in the north. But he says the army needs better equipment if it is to defeat the militants.

Major General Athar Abbas, Pakistan Military spokesman, said, "What we require is a quick mobility, like air mobility, like good surveillance systems, like night vision capability to the military. Like fast moving ground mobility vehicles and better equipment and communications."

The comments come as Pakistan sends helicopter gunships and troops to attack Taliban militants. At least 31 people were killed on Sunday in operations in northern Pakistan. The army spokesman says more army divisions will be sent to support the ongoing offensive against insurgents if needed.

The push appears to endanger a peace pact struck with Taliban militants in the neighbouring Swat Valley. Some officials are demanding that the insurgents disarm, but a Taliban spokesman says they will not give up their weapons.
