US urges Pakistan to focus on Taliban

US Defence Secretary Robert Gates says he hopes the Pakistani government will recognise the fact the Taliban poses a threat to its government. His comments came after US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the Obama administration was working to convince the Pakistani government that its traditional focus on India as a threat had to shift to Islamic extremists.

Clinton was responding to questions about the Pakistani government's decision to allow the imposition of Islamic law in the northwest of the country in exchange for a Taliban cease-fire.
