Sri Lankan move in on tigers

Sri Lankan soldiers battled into the last stronghold of the rebel Tamil Tigers on Tuesday, as tens of thousands of civilians fled the war zone.

The operation gathered speed after a deadline for surrender set by the military for the Tamil Tigers passed unheeded. Instead, the Tigers have vowed not to surrender, and say they are confident they can win the war with the help of the Tamil people.

The Tamil Tigers have been largely outgunned by the government's military build up, which aims to wipe them out and finish the conflict once and for all.
