Iran open to nuclear talks

Iran's president says his country is open to talks with the West over its nuclear programme. But he insists the talks must be based on respect for Iran's rights.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad made the comments Thursday during celebrations for Iran's Nuclear Day.
Iran declared progress with its nuclear program after its first nuclear fuel production plant opened. The country also announced it had tested more advanced equipment for enriching uranium.
Ahmadinejad's comments came after the US and other nations invited Iran for direct talks on in its nuclear programme. But Iran insists its nuclear plan is only for peaceful purposes.
It is continuing its uranium enrichment despite pressure and sanctions from western countries.
