Army to ensure safety of ASEAN summit

Fifteen Asian leaders will take part in the ASEAN summit which begins on Thursday in Thailand's seaside resort of Pattaya. Thailand says it will call in army reinforcements if necessary to ensure the safety of state leaders attending the summit.

Suthep Thuaksuban, Thai Deputy FM, said, "The police commander is already working now in Pattaya with all the security units, and if the police units are not enough we'll get the soldiers to come and help. I guarantee to everyone that all of the ASEAN leaders who will come for the meeting in Pattaya will be safe."(OUT)

Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva says Thailand is liaising with summit participants to ensure they understand the situation. The summit will group leaders from the 10-nation Association of Southeast Asian Nations and China, Japan, South Korea, India, Australia and New Zealand.

The 14th ASEAN summit was postponed from last December to two phases this year. The first phase was held in Thailand in late February.
