It was the first major international Buddhist conference held in the Chinese mainland since the founding of new China.
It drew over 1,000 monks, nuns and experts from 37 countries and regions. They conducted in-depth exchanges in academic research, Buddhism education, and culture, as well as the social responsibilities of their religion. The theme was "A harmonious world begins in the mind." Among the participants was the 11th Panchen Lama.

11th Panchen Lama, said, "Chinese society provides a favorable environment for Buddhist believers. I sincerely hope that this grand forum will enhance the unity between Buddhists and between Buddhists and non-Buddhists."
