Madagascar's top generals have handed over control of the Indian Ocean island country to opposition leader, Andry Rajoelina.

The transfer came just hours after President Marc Ravalomanana stepped down and tried to put the military in charge.

Marc Ravalomanana announced he would dissolve the government on Tuesday, after weeks of struggle with opposition leader, Andry Rajoelina.

The president said he was transferring power so that a military government could be put in place.

Aides of the president said he handed power to navy admiral, Hyppolite Ramaroson, Madagascar's highest ranking officer.

Later, four military generals selected by Ravalomanana headed to the Christian Church Association to inform Rajoelina and church leaders of the presidential decree.
