German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy have jointly rejected U.S. calls for more economic stimulus plans.

Presenting a united front after their meeting in Berlin on Thursday, the leaders stressed that the upcoming G-20 summit should work towards achieving tough financial regulations.

Sarkozy stressed that France and Germany have already invested huge sums to check the economic meltdown.

He said the European priority now is achieving international agreements to tighten up regulation of financial markets.

Merkel said Germany and France have identical positions on the issue of financial regulation urging Britain to adopt the same view.
