Chinese leaders join group discussions

The economy and people's livelihoods continue to dominate discussion of Chinese lawmakers and advisors. Leaders joined delegations to learn about local concerns.

While meeting with Guangdong lawmakers, President Hu Jintao extended holiday greetings to woman deputies ahead of International Women's Day on Sunday. President Hu then said the financial crisis has brought challenges and opportunities. He encouraged the deputies to maintain confidence and overcome the difficulties. He said they need to further implement the central government's policy to improve people's livelihood, and ensure steady, rapid development.

Shandong NPC deputies briefed NPC Chairman Wu Bangguo on promoting economic development, increasing farmers' incomes and measures to develop revolutionary bases. Wu Bangguo stressed the importance of achieving long-term development and improving local companies' competitiveness and ability in dealing with risks.

Premier Wen Jiabao told the Hubei NPC delegation to put the economy at the top of the agenda while raising people's living standards. Other members of the CPC Standing Committee also took part in group discussions.
