China's diplomacy made impressive success in the past year and faces more challenges in the coming year. Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jieche made the remarks during a press conference at the ongoing National People's Congress meetings in Beijing on Saturday.

China's diplomacy made impressive success in the past year and faces more challenges in the coming year.

2008 was an eventful and challenging year for China and China's diplomacy.

Yang Jiechi, Chinese Foreign Minister said "The challenges confronting our country and China's diplomacy last year have been rarely seen for years in terms of scale, severity and impact. We fought natural disasters including the devastating earthquake in Wenchuan. We worked hard to cope with the international financial crisis. We successfully hosted the Olympic Games in spite of disruptive factors."

Yang said the 2008 Olympic Games was the most important work for diplomats in the past year. It helped China promote cultural diplomacy.

Last year, more than 180 foreign heads of state and government, and other political leaders came to China on official visits and for the Olympics and the Paralympics. That was unprecedented in the history of China's diplomacy.
