China says it regrets the International Criminal Court's issuance of an arrest warrant for the Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir.

Foreign Ministry spokesman, Qin Gang, says China hopes the Security Council will consider the possible consequences and listen to calls from African and Arab countries to suspend the case against Bashir. The priority, he says, is to maintain stability in the region.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said, "Our focus is peace and stability in the region. We don't want to see all our efforts and the achievements we have had in the Darfur region being ruined because of this act. The Chinese government has made great efforts in order to gain these achievements, and we don't want to see those efforts come to nought. So we have reason to express our regret."

Qin Gang also said China will stay in close contact with all the relevant parties, and fulfill its responsibilities in this matter. And China will continue to develop its cooperative partnership with the Sudanese government.
