Special Report:   2009 NPC & CPPCC Sessions

China is practicing thrift by streamlining the annual sessions of its legislature and top advisory body and cutting the budget for delegates. The change comes against the backdrop of the global financial crisis. The two sessions are required to be environmentally friendly as well.

The NPC and CPPCC have tightened their agendas, and sessions are 7 days shorter than last year.

Wu Zhenglong, NPC Deputy of Chongqing, said, "It's a sign of practical manner,a promotion for efficient working style."

Luo Weiqi, NPC Deputy of Guangdong, said, "I think saving money by us NPC deputies will win the people's support and is a meaningful action to help the country."

The number of designated hotels has been cut to reduce transport fees.

Chang Dechuan, NPC Deputy of Shandong, said, "I feel the meeting this year is more economical and environmentally-friendly. For example, the souvenirs are simple and not very expensive."

Chang Dechuan showed me the pen and materials provided by the organizing committee. He says most people prefer electronic materials.

Food is always a major expense. This year, the designated hotels have promised to provide better service at lower cost.
