US Mideast envoy meets Jordan’s king

US President Barack Obama's Mideast envoy discussed the Gaza cease fire and the Middle Eastern peace process on Saturday with Jordan's King Abdullah II.

George Mitchell says the US is committed to "actively and aggressively" seeking a lasting peace in the region. But he warned there are challenges and setbacks ahead in forging peace between Israel and the Palestinians.

Abdullah calls the scale of the recent Israeli military operations upsetting. Jordan is one of only two Arab states to sign peace treaties with Israel. There are fears a collapse of Mideast peace making efforts would spark instability within the kingdom.

Roughly half of Jordan's nearly six million inhabitants are of Palestinian descent. They are members of families that were displaced in two wars with Israel. Before flying to Jordan, Mitchell held talks with Israeli and Palestinian leaders on Friday evening.
