Chinese celebrate Lunar New Year

Special Report: 2009 Spring FestivalFriday was the fifth day of the lunar new year. Tradition also dictates that this is the last day for festive celebrations. People across China packed temple fairs and joined public parades and carnivals.

In many northern Chinese cities, folk shows including stilt walking and lion dancing were coupled with jazz music. Drum-beating has also been a tradition for thousands of years with many hoping the beat of the drum will bring prosperity in the new year.
But the picture is slightly different down South. On top of traditional performances, many communities in Hunan and Sichuan held cooking competitions.
