Official: 300 wounded in Sri Lanka artillery fire

A health official in Sri Lanka is alleging that at least 300 civilians may have been wounded and scores of others are feared killed, by army artillery shells fired into a designated "safe zone". The area was designated as a "no fire zone" for ethnic Tamils trapped by fighting between the military and Tamil rebels.

Under the heavy artillery fire of the Sri Lankan army,the Tamil Tiger rebels lost their last town of Mullaittivu on Sunday. However, civilians still are in danger of being caught up in the deadly clashes.

The government health official said relatives brought some 300 wounded to a Hospital.

A pro-rebel website claims that government artillery fire killed more than 300 civilians in the designated safe zone in northern Sri Lanka on Monday.
