Special Report: Israel airstrikes in GazaAMMAN, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- Jordan's King Abdullah II Sunday urged Israel to immediately abide by the UN Security Council Resolution 1860, ending its aggression on the Gaza Strip, said the Royal Hashemite Court.
The Israeli government should also lift the siege on the Palestinian people and allow humanitarian aids and medical supplies into Gaza, the king said during a meeting with visiting Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
The king called on the international community to coerce Israel to implement the resolution, and the Arab world to come up with a united stand capable of thwarting Israeli plans and launching a real international effort to resolve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, added the statement.
This resolution should end occupation and lead to the establishment of the independent Palestinian state as the only way to realize security and stability in the region, the king said.
Abdullah reaffirmed Jordan's intensive efforts to reach a ceasefire and put an end to the humanitarian catastrophe caused by the Israeli onslaught.
Abbas briefed the king on the outcome of his recent visit to New York and his talks with Egyptian officials in Cairo.
The Israeli operation in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip entered the16th day on Sunday, killing more than 900 Palestinians. On the Israeli side, 13 people have been killed since the operation began on Dec. 27, 2008.
