There are over 10 thousand Macanese living in the Macao special administrative region today. Many of them say the central government's "One Country, Two Systems" policy allows them not just to survive, but thrive, in the region. Remarkable efforts have been made by the Macao SAR government in preserving the region's unique and rich culture, however, many of the younger generation are not aware of their cultural heritage.

Going into the heart of Macao, it’s easy to feel its cultural diversity. A Buddhist temple here, a Catholic church there. A typical Portuguese dish is served side by side with traditional Chinese food. It’s this mixture of East and West that gives Macanese their distinctive cultural heritage.

Miguel Fernandes is the President of the Macanese Association in Macao. For the last 15 years, he’s been doing everything he can to promote Macanese culture in the region. He says the local government has paid a lot of attention to his association, but he still feels there’s more that can be done.

Miguel Fernandes, President of Macanese Association, said, “We’re not alien to, but part of, Macao. We enjoy the same rights as all the other citizens of Macao. By recognizing and accepting this, a real community is born.”
