In Shanghai, retailers are well-prepared to celebrate over the New Year's holiday. Retail sales across the city were up 35 percent from last year's holiday, and one shopping mall is claiming a national record for daily sales during the break.

In Shanghai, retailers are well-prepared to celebrate  over the New Year's holiday. Retail sales across the city  were up 35 percent from last year's holiday, and one  shopping mall is claiming a national record for daily  sales during the break.

The Shanghai No.1 Yaohan Department store took in nearly 260 million yuan on January 1st alone. That means the store sold nearly 4,000 yuan worth of goods every second,since it was open on the first day of the year.

The citywide shopping spree kicked off on December 31st, when major department stores extended their opening hours and offered steep discounts.
