New Africa, a freight ship from China Shipping Group, was the first to arrive in Kaohsiung on Tuesday. It arrived just one day after it departed from Shanghai. The ship carried more than 2,000 cargo containers of light industrial products and other daily necessities. Industry insiders in Kaohsiung say the direct shipping links will help restore the vitality of local manufacturers and exporters.
Han Guofu, Board Chairman Kaohsiung Shipping Company, said, "The mainland ship carried mostly light industrial goods, including electronic parts, clothing and shoes. In the past, the sea transport from Shanghai to Kaohsiung took at least two days. But now, the journey is 600 nautical miles shorter than before. "
