Entering the new century, China was pulling in more resources to catch up with the developed world in science and technology. Years of dynamic economic progress offered a solid material base, while a new generation of young Chinese was also better equipped to master new knowledge.

The government was taking on this task on two fronts - allocating more money to scientific research, and making science more accessible to ordinary people.

In December 2001, an imposing science museum opened in Shanghai.

Its exhibitions aimed to bring scientific principles to life. Visitors could take an exciting journey to the center of the Earth, touch prehistoric dinosaurs, or match their skills against a robot.

The museum also had several large screen 3-D, or even 4-D, cinemas. Complex theories in physics, mathematics, and biology were presented through interactive models or computer simulation.
