Special Report:   5th China-U.S. SED

The next China-US Strategic Economic Dialogue is set to start Thursday this week. Speaking ahead of the 2-day event, Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan and US Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson focused on how to boost cooperation. Meanwhile, Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao has stressed that China is willing to continue to work with the new administration under Barack Obama.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao called the SED an important mechanism to promote healthy and stable development in Sino-U.S. economic relations. He said it has helped promote discussions on several key issues.

Liu Jianchao, Spokesman of Chinese Foreign Ministry said "This mechanism serves a vital role in Sino-US relations. We are willing to keep working with the new US administration to enhance economic and trade cooperation for the benefit of both peoples."

The fifth round of the SED is to be held in Beijing from Thursday to Friday. During the meeting, Chinese and US officials will discuss a wide range of issues such as macro-economic policy, the financial crisis, energy, the environment, trade, investment, food safety and product quality.

Earlier on Tuesday, Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan and US Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson discussed the upcoming talks on the telephone. Both sides exchanged views also on enhancing bilateral cooperation, coping with the ongoing financial crisis, pushing forward the Doha round of trade talks and fighting protectionism.
